Serendipity

I just discovered heaven.

In my sister's cupboard.

What is that I heard you mumble?
Clothes,eh?

Shucks. Sorry to disappoint you, but my definition of heaven differs slightly from that of the usual teenage girl.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, here is what I discovered:

Can you make that out?

Oh yes. That is a collection of classics. And as it turns out, the very books I wanted to read. Coincidence?

So what, you ask. Well as it so happens, I have an equal amount of free time to parallel this humongous amount of literature. Yes, you got that right, Hols On! \m/

To begin with, I have picked up 'Sense and Sensibility'.And I do happen to have a background to support my choice.

I just started with watching movies intended for this summer break. And, by chance, the last two movies I saw happened to be - 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Becoming Jane'. Consequently , I seem to have developed an interest in Jane Austen's life and books.

If you have seen 'Becoming Jane', you probably know this already.

Austen died relatively young, at the age of 41. The reason for her death was indeterminable at the time of her death. It is believed that the culprits are Addison's disease and Hodgkin's lymphoma. (both discovered and named later in the 19th century). But even in so short a life span, she successfully churned out six major novels.

Austen's books are a reflection of her own thoughts against the social setting of Europe in the late 18th and the early 19th century. She never married, so her angst was focused on matters of the heart. In many ways, she lived vicariously through her characters, allowing them to experience the intimacies she craved, but that eluded her all her life.

If you've seen 'Becoming Jane', you might be able to recollect this dialogue-
"My characters will have a bit of hardships, but in the end they will get all that they yearn for."

(or something like that. I never was good at recounting a dialogue verbatim.)

Enough said. It's time to retire for my siesta and then to 'Sense and Sensibility'.

Cheerio.

  1. You're welcome! :P
Coincidentally, I'm reading Little Women currently.

You might want to add Jane Eyre and Journey to the center of the Earth to your list. Both are poles apart. Definitely worth reading. :)
