Lately, I have realised that the net is more of a bane than a boon. Before you pounce on me, let me explain. The net is responsible for bringing the world at our doorstep, making the world a smaller place, blah-blah.
True.
But it is also responsible for virtually killing our free time. (Pardon the pun.) I realised that everytime I switch on my computer, for whatever reason, the net always has to be switched on too. Why? And it is not even required half of the time. And once I am on the net, it takes up at least two hours.
I had tried to give up this stupid addiction long time back, but was never able to. And it took a free week to make me realise the reason. It is because I didn't have the incentive. That's right. But this week made me realise just how much more we can do with our lives than just sitting in front of a screen and torturing our eyes all day long.
And I tried pursuing my hobbies this week for a change. Guitar tops the list. It is the only hobby on my mind right now as my fingers hurt while I type. Also, someone told me his plans for the self growth course as sketching. (The self growth course is something our college proposed to ensure people have an all round development. One of their better ideas, I would say.) It was then that I realised just how long it had been since I had been free enough to give sketching another shot. I had tried earlier (About 2 years earlier. Yes, that is last when I had a real break.) and managed a nice picture. The only catch was that I had merely copied an already shaded picture from a shading book. (But you have to give me some credit. You do need to know the shading techniques, even to copy.) Well, I tried again. And got the same result. A beautiful shading, which one might be really proud of, if only you did not have the real picture to compare it with.Anyways, if I manage to continue with this, sooner or later, I will learn to sketch original pictures.
And I found some pretty good movies. Like 'The Sound Of Music'. It had been one of the highest grosser in it's times. And it's surprising to know that the protagonist in this film, Julie Andrews, is the same lady who played the much loved role of Anne Hathaway's grandmom in 'The Princess Diaries'. Even more surprising is the fact that this movie is based on a real life incident. (In 1918, just following the war, Austria had been seized by the Nazis. The story is about a family of seven children and and their parents who escape the country in this turmoil.) Also saw the much hyped 'Salt' and 'The Tourist'. My vote would go to 'Salt'. Yeah, saw 'Karate Kid' too. I could go on and on with the list.
Passing grumble: the DDA has taken it upon itself to spoil my holidays. I don't get it. Why are they not letting the sports clubs open up pools? Don't they realise it is a seasonal sport. I mean, they really think that their opening it up after two months will be just the same? It's plain idiotic.
And now I am in danger of flouting my own rule.( I mean, sitting on the net for so long typing this blog.) It's decided then. I will give the net a break of about 4-5 days after every access. (Lets hope I am able to carry this ideal plan off.)

I couldn't agree more with you. On almost every account. The last one year has not been what I had envisioned it to be. And were I to sit down and jot down the reasons, 'Constantly (mis)using net' would surely top the list.
ReplyDeleteAnd who is to blame in the end?
Me and No one else. Which is sad.
There is more to life than this. A lot more. :D
