I've just been pushed out into the big bad world. Working in an MNC, I am gradually learning the ropes of the corporate life.
I think I learnt my first valuable lesson today, so I will grab at this opportunity to list down all the do's and don'ts of your work life, lest I make a fool of myself again. Here goes:
1. Keep you personal and work life separate. I mean completely separate. You don't go to work to make friends, they appreciate professionalism. And none of your family and friends back home enjoy that serious side of yours. Often, your mom would have a 'feeling' that something isn't right in your life and try to pry it out of you in vain. Total disaster.
2. Granted you're witty and humorous and can make a laugh riot out of any situation, kindly do not try it with people at work. More often than not, they won't share your sense of humor. (Or maybe they have already implemented point 1, who knows.)
3. Be punctual, it pays.
4. You would meet all kinds of people, including those who appear to be genuinely interested in helping your career move forward. Do not trust them.
5. Do make it a point to greet people with a smile. And not a fake one, a genuine smile, wishing them well. I've heard what goes around, comes around.
6. Bring your expectations from people at work down to nill. (Unless you're the manager. Even then, relying on deadlines is better than relying on expectations.) It will only cause a setback to your work.
And last of all, enjoy what you do and do what you enjoy.
I'll keep adding to the this list as and when I encounter more do's and don'ts of the corporate jungle.
On a separate note, Diwali day after tomorrow. If you're reading this, here's wishing you a sparkling one. ;)
Ciao.
